Updated: Nov 24, 2023

Cuisine: Maharashtra state of India

Ukadiche modak is made for Ganesha chaturthi as an offering for lord Ganesha.

Ingredients:

For the outer covering:

Rice flour – 1 cup

Water – 1 ½ cups

Oil – 1 teaspoon

Salt – ¼ teaspoon

For inner filling:

Grated coconut - 1 cup

Jaggery – 1 cup

Cardamom powder – ¼ teaspoon

Poppy seeds – 1 teaspoon

Oil – ½ teaspoon

Method:

Inner filling

Heat oil in a pan and add poppy seeds. Fry till they start crackling. Then add grated coconut, jaggery, and cardamom powder. Mix well and cook on low flame. Keep stirring till the mixture thickens. Keep this coconut jaggery mixture aside.

Outer covering

In a vessel, add water, oil, and salt. Let it come to a boil. Now add the rice flour gradually while mixing. Mix well and turn off the flame. Now take all the dough into a big plate. Gather the dough together and begin to knead. The dough will be hot when you begin to knead, so be careful. Knead into a smooth dough. If you feel the dough is too hard, sprinkle a little warm water. Make small balls with the dough. Roll the ball in between your palms without cracks. Take a ball and flatten it with your fingers or on your palms, to a round disc or a shallow bowl shape to a medium thickness. You can apply oil to your palms while flattening. You can keep the edges slightly thin and the center can be thick. Place a few teaspoons of the prepared stuffing in the center. Bring together all the edges and join them. Remove the extra portion of the dough from the top, if any. Shape and taper the top of the modak with your fingers. Take a steamer and pour water on the bottom. Put a greased plate into it. Now place the ready modaks on the plate with little gap between each modak. Cover the steamer with a lid and steam the modaks for 15-20 minutes. Then turn off the flame and let them stay inside the steamer for 10 minutes. Then remove from the steamer and let them cool before serving or offering to lord Ganesha.
